CoastalWave WiFi connects the Detroit Thunderfest APBA Gold Cup
Coastal Wave Marina WiFi service is being made available free to crews,
officials and the press for the 100th year of power boat racing on the
Detroit River. The unlimited hydroplanes competing in the Gold Cup Races
achieve speeds of over 200 mph. Coastal Wave's WiFi achieves speeds of over
1 million bits per second
Officials, crews and reporters will have easy, broadband
Internet connectivity for this year’s legendary Detroit Thunderfest. Coastal
Wave, which provides WiFi access in Ohio and Michigan marinas, will be
extending its network to provide WiFi Internet access for the hundreds of
competitors, officials and reporters in the race control area and team pits
along the Detroit River. The portable broadband Internet connectivity during
the trials and races from July 13th to the Gold Cup on Sunday July 18th will
make it easy for the crews to stay in touch with fans, family, suppliers and
sponsors. Reporters will be able to search related information on the
Internet and file stories in near-real-time. Officials will be able to
exchange information by e-mail, monitor weather radar and access two Coastal
Wave Web Cams covering vital areas of the pits and course.
The Detroit high speed hydroplane races have been closely linked to the
Detroit Yacht Club on Belle Isle for most of the race’s 100 year history.
The Thunderfest race course is located on the Detroit River between Belle
Isle and the Detroit waterfront.
The Detroit Yacht Club was the first Michigan marina to have WiFi coverage
in its harbor. This year, the DYC became the first Coastal Wave Michigan
harbor, and is now part of a rapidly growing network of Great Lakes harbors
that offer the Coastal Wave Internet service. Boaters can subscribe for a
month or season in one Coastal Wave harbor and have WiFi connectivity in
over 50 Coastal Wave harbors from Cleveland, OH to Harbor Springs, MI.
Coastal Wave harbors in the Detroit area include the DYC, Keans Yacht Basin,
Harbor Hill Marina, Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, Emerald City Marina, Jefferson
Beach Marina and Belle Maer, providing coverage to over 3500 boats.
Coastal Wave subscribers will be able to receive live audio coverage of the race over the Internet by following the “Coverage” links from www.gold-cup.com.
