Enertel Acquires Hotspot Operator WinQ

In its aim to strengthen its position in the wireless space, Dutch fixed operator Enertel has acquired hotspot operator WinQ. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
WinQ is one of the four largest Dutch hotspot operators. It provides wireless Internet access to corporate clients at locations such as Marriott Courtyard Amsterdam Airport, Evoluon and Feijenoord football stadium, as well as to users in the HotZone Eindhoven. WinQ claims to distinguish itself in the market by adapting to the business models of the clients, as well as by offering guest usage at hotspots from operators such as Vodafone, KPN, WeRoam, GBIA, iPass, Mach, Trustive etc.
The acquisition is part of Enertel’s aim to gain a leading position in the Dutch market for wireless broadband Internet access, hotzones and hotspots. As part of this strategy, the company obtained a long-term license for Wireless Local Loop in December 2003. In the meantime, Enertel is developing new products and services, based on WLL and WLAN.
“We expect the market for fast wireless data communication and Internet access to grow significantly the coming years”, said Cees Meeuwis, CEO Enertel N.V. “In the past two years, WinQ has proven to be a market leader. Through the combination of their expertise, our WLL license and our vast fiber optic infrastructure, we can offer an unmatched and complete range of wireless services.”
