Transactions conducted online are expected to be worth €2.2 trillion in the EU by 2006, a conference in Dundalk was told today.

The report, presented at the CEO Roundtable, held in conjunction with the Informal EU Ministerial Conference on Broadband - Content and Demand Stimulation, revealed that currently eBusiness in Europe is worth €77 billion but will increase dramatically in the next two years.

The report prepared by a group of 20 leading ICT chief executives from international companies spanning the digital content value chain from across the Europe, was presented to the EU Communications Ministers at a Roundtable at Dundalk Institute of Technology today.

The executives said they expected broadband penetration in European households to reach 30% by 2008, up from 8% currently. This would see a revenues from broadband increase from €3.3 billion this year to €21.7 billion in 2008.

The report states: “The use of wireless broadband to access information and applications from mobile devices is still in its infancy, but total European mobile content and service revenues are projected to grow from €5.8 billion in 2002 to €45.6 billion next year.

The report, prepared by PriceWaterhouseCoopers calls for:

The timely implementation of effective anti-spam, privacy and security regulatory frameworks
Initiatives to make competitively priced broadband available
EU Government’s application of broadband in key public services
the development of innovative broadband content and services

The companies present at the Roundtable are estimated to have a collective market capitalisation of almost $200 billion. They held a two hour meeting with Ministers, including EU Communications Minister President, Dermot Ahern TD and EU Commissioner Erkki Liikanen.

The CEO Roundtable is the first of its kind at an EU Ministerial meeting in Europe and allowed Ministers and the private sector to identify the strategic issues for the future of broadband.

Minister Ahern said: “This Roundtable has been a great success as it has allowed both policy makers and industry to focus on our strategic priorities for the future. Broadband, through the services and content it can deliver, is providing a platform for sustaining and creating jobs across Europe as well as helping business and consumers work and play smarter."
